Summer in Bad Ischl

Bad Ischl
Bad Ischl is an active town, with festivals and events throughout the year.
Explore the town's links with the Austrian royal family at the Kaiservilla and town museum. For those who enjoy music, the summer months provide endless variety with up to 3 concerts a day in the parks and concert halls of the town. The main event throughout the summer is the Lehar Festival which celebrates the life and works of the composer who lived in Bad Ischl. Visit the Lehar Villa where he lived.

There are lovely walks and cycle rides in the town and surrounding countryside. Or you can just relax on the esplanade and enjoy some coffee and cake at Zauner's Konditorei, or while away the hours in the Thermal spa.

Places of Interest
If you prefer a more relaxing break you can just savour the beautiful scenery and the Austrian villages. Lake Wolfgang is just 15 minutes away, with the villages of Strobl, St Gilgen and St Wolfgang (of "White Horse Inn"  fame) on its shores. You can spend a most enjoyable day sailing between the villages, stopping off at each one to go exploring. Visit the Blue Dome (World of Water)  or take the railway to the top of the Schafberg mountain for great views across the lakes the the Dachstein mountains.

Also nearby is the very picturesque village of Hallstatt, famous for its 4000 year long history of salt mining, and now a  UNESCO World Heritage site. Nearby you can visit the salt mines, the Dachstein caves and the Ice cave at Obertraun.

Just that little bit further away, but well worth a visit, is Salzburg. The home of Mozart, the city is still alive with fine music, museums, cathedrals and gardens. You can even take the "Sound of Music" tour to visit the sites used in the film.

The region has a rich culture, with festivals throughout the year. There is always something to visit, to see, or to do, whatever the season: alpine meadows to walk through in spring; warm lakes in which to swim in summer; golden vistas in autumn; Advent markets and festive activities in winter. Take a look at our "What's On" page to see details of forthcoming events.
